It’s true, Ale House Inn does not serve food. Our Portsmouth hotel wouldn’t even think of competing with the incredible dining options located just outside our door! With over 250 restaurants in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to choose from, we have selected some of our favorites, all within walking distance of our boutique hotel.



Anneke Jans (207) 439-0001 | Located just over the bridge in Kittery, this acclaimed, bistro-style restaurant is a favorite. Old and new friends gather to eat, drink and be merry. Menu changes often.



The Black Birch (207) 703-2294 | Simplicity is what makes the Black Birch so inviting. Sit at dining tables made from reclaimed wood. Sip classically-influenced cocktails or one of 24 drafts. Savor a refined take on classic comfort foods made from wicked-fresh ingredients.



Black Trumpet (603) 431-0887 | Family-owned bistro and wine bar in the heart of Portsmouth’s historic old port. The menu changes every six weeks to capitalize on the freshest seasonal ingredients. The wine list features a variety of unheralded gems that pair well with the bold flavors of Chef Mallett’s cuisine. If you’re a fan of “Farm-to-table” then this is your place. We prefer to dine upstairs in the Wine Bar.



Moxy (603) 319-8178 | Tapas with a New England flair. Moxy is super-creative with unique pairing/tasting menus and snazzy flavors. It holds the title of “buzziest” of all the area’s buzzed-about restaurants at the moment.



Surf (603) 334-9855 | So you’ve come to the seacoast and you want seafood? Surf is the place. Fresh, exquisitely prepared seafood.Waterfront views from most tables.



Radici (603) 373-6464 | Experience the authentic tastes of the old country in downtown Portsmouth. Low lights and candles create an intimate atmosphere as flavors mingle and simmer in the air — taking you away to Italian landscapes and seaside villas. That’s amore! (Be sure to try their Sunday Brunch as well.)



Library Restaurant (603) 431-5202 I Visions of cigars and a neat glass of scotch fill your brain when you enter this classic steakhouse located in an historic 1785 mansion. Great slabs of meat and “a night out” comfort food, such as French onion soup and shrimp cocktail.



Brazo (603) 431-0050 | Flavors of Latin and South American cuisine are completely at home in northern reaches. It’s everything an exotic journey should be, while only an arm’s length from downtown Portsmouth.



Cava (603) 319-1575 | Featuring two wine bars, one on street level and one in the Wine Cave, the owners offer a diverse and always changing selection of international wines to be paired with Chef Sessler’s modern and classic Mediterranean cuisine. 



Martingale Wharf (603) 431-0901 I Located just a few doors down from the inn on Bow Street. Hands down the best waterfront deck in downtown Portsmouth. An upscale American bistro featuring one of the most unique glass topped bars we’ve come across.



Mombo (603) 433-2340 I Mombo showcases made-from-scratch New American cuisine with an international twist. Watch the team in action from the open-kitchen bar or the chef’s table.
