Massachusetts: The Lizzie Borden House

If you’re a Massachusetts native, you know the infamous story of Lizzie Borden. If you missed the nursery rhymes in elementary school, here’s the short of it for now, but you’ll want to go visit to see for yourself.

In the late morning on August 4, 1892, 32-year-old Lizzie is thought to have chopped her father to death with a hatchet while he was napping. Later, her stepmother was also found dead inside their home in Fall River having suffered 20 ax blows to the head. No one witnessed the crime and no murder weapon was found. Lizzie denied the allegations and the case remains unsolved.

Mirbeau Inn & Spa and Dan’l Webster Inn and Spa are both luxurious and convenient places to stay nearby, though there are many other locations in Massachusetts

Rhode Island: The Conjuring House

Burrillville, RI is home to The Conjuring House, which was made famous by The Conjuring movie in 2013 as it told the story of the hauntings of the Perron Family who lived here in the 1970s. Paranormal activity and many spirits continue to inhabit the property making it one of the most active paranormal locations in the world.

Here, you’ll likely discover that our consciousness survives death. Ready to explore? Stay at one of the nearby Rhode Island inns to ensure the nightmares stay away for the weekend.

Maine: Mount Hope Cemetery

When it comes to Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor, Maine, you may think about the location being writer Stephen King’s spot of true inspiration or that it is home to the graves of US ambassadors and Civil War generals.

But, this cemetery is widely known as being the most haunted place in Maine. As one of the nation’s oldest garden cemeteries, it holds a strange energy—so much so that many have noted that they have felt cold spots or heard footsteps around them at dusk.

Stay at the nearby Captain Nickels Inn and experience the chills for yourself. This haunting site might make you a believer in life after death.

New Hampshire: The James House and Three Chimneys Inn

The James House in Hampton, New Hampshire was built in 1723. Since then, visitors have reported ghostly sightings in the windows, unsettling laughter throughout the halls, and doors slamming mysteriously. Some occurrences have even been caught on camera.

If you’re feeling brave, stay a half mile down the road from The James House at Three Chimneys Inn to experience a weekend full of unexpected spooking. It has been said that doors lock unexpectedly and silverware and furniture move inexplicably. If you’re looking to have sweet dreams only, check out the many other inns and resorts located around New Hampshire when no spooky sightings have been reported… yet.

Vermont: Eddy House

William and Horatio Eddy were thought to have intense psychic powers. They endured a life of extreme abuse because of these gifts. It was only later in their lives that they were able to truly exercise their medium powers and practice actively, summoning groups of deceased beings to their home. Nearly every type of supernatural phenomena was reported at their farmhouse.

If you’re not yet convinced, stay nearby to experience the paranormal energy around the Eddy House and visit it yourself.

Connecticut: The Bruce Museum

At first glance, The Bruce Museum in Greenwich seems to be similar to any other museum with its skeletons, famous paintings, and historic artifacts. And while it’s wonderful to visit for these aspects, some have found intrigue in diving a little deeper into the establishment.

In 1853, the building was built as a private home referred to as Bruce Mansion. It is said that an Irish immigrant was working as a maid in the area and fell in love with a piper. The lovers often spent time together near Bruce Mansion at Bruce Park, the piper playing his flute and the maid singing softly along.

One evening, the piper suddenly and mysteriously disappeared. The maid was heartbroken and distraught, forcing her to return to Ireland where she then died of tuberculosis. Many museum visitors have reported seeing two figures on the grounds, looking starkly similar to two lovers, one with a flute in hand.

Stanton House Inn is the perfect place to stay as it is located in Greenwich, Connecticut, just a short drive to the haunted museum as well as many other spooky sites. If you’re lucky, you may witness the lovers in their most cherished spot on the day of your visit.
