New Hampshire Summer: Beaches, Mountains, and More

By nature, New Hampshire is one of the most outdoorsy states in all of the East. Though the activities may change from season to season, this theme remains true in the warmer months as well. Some of the best New Hampshire summer activities revolve around enjoying the outdoors and getting out into the trees, sand, and water. We’ve pulled together our favorite activities and locations that you won’t want to miss.

Take in the View

NH summer hikes are great for exploring wildlife and witnessing biodiversity because the state is in full bloom and alive with movement. If you’re looking for sweeping views of wetlands, ponds, and mountains, explore the Pondicherry Wildlife Sanctuary. With 166 acres and nine miles of trails, this refuge has a variety of hikes ranging from long and difficult, to short and easy, and everything in between.

Located in the awe-inspiring White Mountains, the Waterville Flume is a 5.4-mile moderate hike that features overlooks with views of Waterville Valley, Mount Tecumseh, East Osceola, and Mad River Notch, among other landmarks. But, when you reach Waterville Flume—a deep gorge with 60+ foot walls carving through the mountains—you’ll know you’ve made it to the highlight of the show.

Hit the Beach

With 13 miles of coastline along the Atlantic, Hampton Beach is one of the biggest and most popular summer destinations for locals and visitors looking for a classic beachy vibe. With festivals and concerts running all summer long, there’s no shortage of activities when it comes to this well-known area. Walk the lively boardwalk, dine al fresco on a buttery lobster roll overlooking the sea, or simply enjoy the salty air as you lounge in the sand.

If you’re more of a lake lover, Weirs Beach is a great option with an abundance of outdoorsy activities. New Hampshire is popular for its superior lake region and the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee is no different. Unlike typical New Hampshire beaches, Weirs has five arcades, bumper cars, and the iconic Weirs Beach Drive-In (more on this beloved theater later).

Experience a Drive-In

There are a variety of New Hampshire drive-ins, but like any local, we have our top three. Like we mentioned above, Weirs Drive-In is the perfect place to stop in after a day at the beach. Grab some popcorn, snuggle up in the back of your car, and watch the sun set on the perfect day as the feature film begins.

Classic and fun, Milford Drive-In and Northfield Drive-In are other great options that play current movies on the weekends and feature extensive and creative snack menus.

Explore the Water by Kayak

No trip to New Hampshire is complete without some kayaking! The Androscoggin River is a great option for beginners and experienced kayakers alike as it has many in and out points along the water that lead to hiking trails and parks, some whitewater rapid areas, and beautiful views of the forests and mountains. Here, a day on the water is a day well spent!

Chase Some Waterfalls

The White Mountains offer swimming holes, stunning views, peaceful hikes through forests, and, of course, some of New Hampshire’s most iconic waterfalls. You’ve probably heard of The Flume, a dramatic 800-foot-long gorge that features a series of cascades and falls as large as 40 feet. This stunning walk is truly a work of natural art.

Rocky George and Lower Falls, Crystal Cascade, and Glen Ellis Falls are also a few stunning chutes that we recommend checking out.
