Where are the best places in the state to see the foliage?
When it comes to where to see fall foliage in Rhode Island, we have a few ideas in mind. The western and northern parts of the state are heavily wooded which means more leaves to peep! Both Roger Williams Park and Zoo in Providence and Blithewold Mansion Gardens in Bristol offer some of the best fall foliage in Rhode Island, in our opinion.
What is the best time of year to go?
Though it depends on the year, generally mid to late October is the sweet spot when it comes to the best time of year to see fall foliage in Rhode Island. As you could probably guess the leaves change colors earlier in colder climates and in the mountains. Because Rhode Island is more on the southern tip of New England, the leaves typically change later in the season. New England has a fall foliage map that allows you to track early, mid, late, and peak foliage in each of the states.
What are some popular walks and drives to see the leaves?
When Rhode Island’s fall foliage is at its peak, one of the best ways to take in the mosaic of colors is a drive along Route 1 and 1A from Westerly to Wickford. This adventure will have you feeling like you’re the main character in a 2000’s fall romantic comedy.
The 14 miles of Ocean Drive in Newport is also a great way to see some vibrant yellows, reds, and oranges. This winding drive offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and Fort Adams State Park. While you’re in Newport, venture onto the iconic Cliff Walk, a 3-mile walk along the water that offers beautiful views of the Narragansett Bay and Jamestown Island as well as the famous Gilded Age mansions and college lawns.
The Scituate Loop drive is also a great place to see fall foliage in Rhode Island as it takes you around the Scituate Reservoir, providing not only views of the water but also stunning changing leaves. While you’re there in October, stop at the Scituate Art Festival, an arts and crafts fair that features antiques, fair food, shopping, and more.
