Ski Resort Opening Dates New England

Ski Resort Opening Dates

You may think of New England as primarily craggy coastlines and dense forests, lobster rolls and maple syrup, but there’s so much more to this region of the world come winter. The beautiful mountainsides lose their vibrant leaves and fill with powdery snow, criss-crossed with trails of pure white — some of the best ski slopes in the country, that easily rival what you’ll find on the West Coast.

If you’re looking for a truly perfect ski-centric getaway, look no further. The inns and resorts of New England have you covered, no matter the destination.

Connecticut Ski Resorts

Comparatively, Connecticut has a smaller ski selection than its New England ski resort siblings, and the various resorts don’t open until December, but that hardly makes them less worthy of your time.

  • Ski Sundown: Dec. 8
  • Mohawk Mountain: Dec. 8
  • Mount Southington Ski Area: Dec. 20
  • Powder Ridge Park Dec. 22
  • Woodbury Ski Area: To Be Announced

Connecticut also happens to be a great destination if you’re dying to strap on your skis, but your fellow travelers aren’t quite so keen on the idea of spending all day in the snow. At Interlaken Inn, in Lakeville, everyone gets their way. The resort is in just the right location to allow you plenty of access to skiing, cross country skiing, sleigh rides, snowboarding and snowshoeing, but you’re also only a short drive away from luxury shopping, dining and world-class entertainment.

Massachusetts Ski Resorts

There’s a bounty of skiing options when you visit Massachusetts! Plus, the convenience of a major international airport in Boston makes getting to your favorite resort faster a breeze.

Wachusett Mountain Ski Area is projected to open Nov. 23, followed a week later by Jiminy Peak (Nov. 30).

In December, you can expect the rest of the New England ski resorts to open:

  • Berkshire East: Dec. 1
  • Ski Ward: Dec. 11
  • Ski Butternut: Dec. 13
  • Blue Hills Ski Area: Dec. 15
  • Otis Ridge Ski Area: Dec. 15
  • Bradford Ski Area: Dec. 15
  • Bousquet Ski Area: Dec. 20
  • Nashoba Valley: Dec. 22
  • Blindfold Ski Area: Dec. 28

There are easily just as many picturesque resorts and inns to choose from in the state, as there are slopes, and each of them offers something unique to you and your family.

Take, for example, the Beechwood Hotel. Not only is it the only AAA Four Diamond hotel in the Central Massachusetts region, but it provides great access to skiing, snowboarding and tubing. Those in your group who aren’t fans of the cold can enjoy spa treatments and antique shopping, before you all meet up for dinner at the sophisticated Ceres Bistro.

Rhode Island Skiing!

Yes, you can still ski in New England as far south as Rhode Island!

The state boasts one ski resort, Yawgoo Valley, which is projected to open Dec. 8. The resort is one of the southernmost ski areas in New England and doubles as a waterpark in the summer. With 12 trails and 36 acres of skiable terrain, it’s a can’t-miss if you live nearby, or if you just have never been.

Yawgoo Valley, in Exeter, is only a short drive from one of Rhode Island’s most notable destinations, Newport. During winter’s off season, you can have your run of the seaside town, enjoying the extensive dining and shopping options, all with a local flair. When you stay at Castle Hill Inn, you get the best of both worlds — Newport (and all dressed up for the holidays, too!) and the nearby slopes.
