The History of Salem
Established in 1626 by English Puritans, seaside Salem quickly became a busy port known for its shipping and trade. In 1692, the town’s reputation was forever altered with the mass hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials. Even today, the 20 people who were executed for being accused of witchcraft are remembered as Salem embraces the mysterious events of the past. The Witch House, which was owned by Judge Jonathan Corwin during the trials, is a popular place to visit to better understand the events that took place. Especially during the fall, Salem welcomes the spooky and haunting nature of its storied past with ghost tours, costumes, a Halloween festival, haunted houses, and more.
Year round, the city is adorned with beautifully preserved colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, superior restaurants, and an array of museums and historic sites that explore its maritime and witchcraft heritage, making this place as charming as it is fascinating. Galleries, boutiques, and eclectic shops line Essex Street, local seafood and New England cuisine can be found along the water, and community events like cider tastings, movie nights on the Common, and maritime festivals occur throughout the seasons.

The Coach House on Lafayette Street has quite the history—and it’s worth exploring as a visitor. Built in 1879, the original owner of the property was local sea captain, Ephraim Augustus Emerton, and at that time, it was the epitome of utmost Victorian elegance. In the 1950s, the home was converted to an inn, which is how it stayed for 60 years. It was again bought in 2022 and the new owner decided to recreate the inn making it into a boutique hotel, crafting a new-found experience for all guests. The essence of the estate’s history has been preserved, yet modern amenities, contemporary design, and most importantly, comfort, has been incorporated.

Also located in the heart of Salem is The Merchant, a luxury hotel that pays homage to its commissioner, Joshua Ward, a post-Revolutionary War sea merchant and privateer. Constructed by the praised architect, Samuel McIntire, the property has hosted notable guests such as President Washington in 1789. Through the centuries the federal style building has morphed into many things before becoming the well-appointed and design-driven, comfortable hotel it is today.
