Vermont in Fall: Discovering the Best of Autumn's Beauty Amongst the Mountains

While every season in New England has its shining moments, we are a bit biased when it comes to autumn. Think cozy sweaters to combat the crisp air, the aroma of pumpkin spice coffee in the morning, lit-up faces beside the low light of a campfire, the crunch of leaves under hiking boots—there’s a peacefulness that fall brings, a deep breath after a long summer, a new beginning that comes with the season of coziness and colors. It’s the perfect time to get away, so let us be your guide as you embark on your next adventure to Vermont this fall.

Vermont Fall Hikes

Stowe Pinnacle

When it comes to the best fall hikes in Vermont, this moderately challenging hike is one of the most popular in the state. The 3.6 miles of trail take you through thick forest, rock scrambles, and steep stairs before rewarding you with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains—the perfect playground for anybody looking to peep some stunning fall leaves. Located just about two miles from Stowe, this trail is bound to be your favorite if you’re looking for a challenge that yields breathtaking views.

Mount Mansfield

You’re likely familiar with Mount Mansfield as it’s Vermont’s highest peak at 4,395ft. Located in the Green Mountain Range, this mountain draws more hikers than any other peak in the state—and for good reason. While there are many trails to choose from, one of our favorites is Sunset Ridge Trail, a fall classic that offers superior views of fall foliage at the peak as well as along the way.

Vermont Fall Festivals

Autumn on the Green

Vermont fall festivals feature everything from oktoberfests and dog parties to craft shows and harvest demonstrations. Danville’s Autumn on the Green kicks off the season in early October as locals and visitors alike gather to celebrate artisans, crafters, musicians, and local businesses, all with a backdrop of scarlets, golds, and burnt oranges. With over 200 vendors, this festival is the perfect place to shop hand-crafted gifts, sample the flavors of fall (in Vermont fashion), and more.

HarvestFest Weekend

Stratton Mountain is known for more than just its snow. HarvestFest is a family-friendly celebration of all our favorite fall things: foliage, flannels, pumpkin beer, live music, outdoor activities like golf and biking, and more. It also features an annual brewfest and a chili cook-off that you don’t want to miss.

Enchanted Forest

Montpelier’s Enchanted Forest is a family-friendly weekend that showcases the magic of Vermont’s autumn after dark. Embark on a candle-lit hay ride through the forest to witness live music, Hubbard Park’s iconic 50-foot stone tower, and enchanting stories that are born from the magic of the season.

Vermont Fall Foliage

Smugglers’ Notch Pass

Vermont fall foliage is unmatched. Smugglers’ Notch Pass, the road that connects Jeffersonville and Stowe around Mount Mansfield, is a narrow and windy maple tree-lined pathway that serves up a stellar show of colors come fall.

Shelburne Farms and Orchards

When it comes to fall foliage, why not get in on the action? Shelburne Farms and Orchards welcomes you to get up close and personal with the changing fall leaves as you can pick your own apples and take in the views as you spend the afternoon walking the paths along the lake.

Vermont Farmer's Markets

Burlington Farmers Market

One of our favorite Vermont fall activities is strolling through this farmers market every weekend to find fresh vegetables, fruits, and local creations. Burlington’s Farmers Market is Vermont’s largest of its kind and offers a wide selection of items from over 70 vendors every Saturday.

Capital City Farmers Market

Another Vermont fall favorite is Capital City Farmers Market. It runs every Saturday from 9am to 1pm until October 30th and features around 50 vendors selling almost every kind of food you can imagine. It also has a fall festival, plus dogs are welcome every weekend!
