While we at NEIRA are die-hard fans of the classic New England magazines such as Yankee and Vermont Life, we’re also valiant supporters of the upstart publications showing up to chronicle the new cultures of this region.
We think the following new magazines and publications from around these parts will compliment your current New England media diet quite nicely.

The Take: Northampton, MA

Founded to “chronicle New England’s new culture,” Take is a glossy and gorgeous compendium of all things cool. Their in-depth music and entertainment features are the best way to kill an afternoon. And though they're based in Northampton, they spread their coverage far and wide across New England.

Junction: Eastern VT and Western NH

More journalistic in practice than the culture-heavy Take, Junction covers the arts, culture, food and farms of Eastern VT and Western NH, or –– the fecund flood plains along the Connecticut River.

Dispatch: Portland, ME

Dispatch is so totally Portland and we love it. The magazine makes no bones about showcasing the flashy and underground parts of their buzzing coastal city. While their features are on par with any culture writing that you’d find in a major city, Dispatch is best for dispatching exactly what you need to know to have a good night on the town. Where to eat, what show to see, and which bar to post up at afterwards will no longer be questions after you peruse their website.

The Cut-Up: New London, CT

New London, Connecticut is one New England mini-city bringing a formidable new culture to the northern seacoast. Thankfully, they have an extremely well-done zine to record all the goings-on. The Cut Up focuses on New London's thriving music scene but also publishes poetry, regular journalism, and killer collage art.

Brave Little State: Vermont

Okay, okay, you got us. Brave Little State is not a paper or digital magazine but a podcast! We include it here because podcasts (especially good ones) are like audible magazines. They tell stories, let us know about important news events, and are chock full of Vermont culture.
