New England vacationland just got an upgrade — three brand new hotels debut this year and 15 more have been transformed during major renovations. If these properties are any indication, 2016 is all about modern design and a bit of whimsy. These new and improved New England hotels are checking in just in time for your summer vacation, so it’s time to pack your bags and hit the road.
This summer, it’s time to go back to camp. Formerly the Wesley Hotel, Summercamp in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard has been reinvigorated with a modern whimsical style that any camper (or glamper) can embrace. Experience Vermont (with a fresh twist) at the Taconic in Manchester, VT. Opened in December 2015, this boutique hotel brings to mind grand leisure inns of days past while artfully bringing to life modern hospitality whims. Nestled in the mountains, the Taconic certainly is an upgrade from your average weekend in the woods.
250 Main in Rockland, ME, opening summer 2016, sits walking distance from the rocky coast of Maine with stunning water views available from every room. Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend away or a culinary tour of Rockland, this hotel offers all the ingredients (such as a daily wine social hour) to infuse your vacation with some extra fun.
While some may use winter as a time of hibernation, Stage Neck Inn did nothing of the sort. Each of their 58 guest rooms have been renovated, refurbished, or rebuilt with the greatest transformations being their Harborview and Oceanfront Guest Rooms (now with updated railings on their balconies for even greater views!). Look forward to new seating areas in ground floor rooms and Amish-built wall units to house the TV and fireplaces.
Saybrook Point Inn & Spa, in Old Saybrook, CT, just added a luxury, 6-bedroom guesthouse, whimsically dubbed Tall Tales. With ample balconies, waterfront views, and a chic modern style, Tall Tales grants guests the opportunity to relax and unwind amid comfortable spaces in a new Italianate-style home overlooking Long Island Sound.
With a coastal Connecticut location, it’s no wonder that the Madison Beach Hotel spent the winter giving some tender, love and care to their restaurant, The Wharf. The redesigned restaurant now offers a new culinary concept and a decor that is a clear nod to the region. Classy yet quintessentially New England, the restaurant offers six distinct areas tied together by a design scheme that speaks to various degrees of casualness and formality.
Continuing in the spirit of reinvention, the Boston Harbor Hotel is thrilled to unveil 230 newly designed guest rooms and suites. Focusing on clean lines and timeless pieces, Boston Harbor Hotel will showcase a fresh look with a color palette of soothing ocean blues and neutral tone accents to compliment their waterfront setting. Newport, RI’s own Hotel Viking got a big update for a big birthday. The historic hotel starts its ninetieth year with newly renovated public spaces, restaurant, lounge, lobby, and meeting spaces.
Cliff House, located in Ogunquit, Maine, will be reopening its doors in July 2016 after almost a year of renovations. This New England oceanfront resort will introduce a stylish, coastal-inspired design in each of the 134 redesigned guest rooms and suites with terraces and ocean views.
Publick House Historic Inn & Country Lodge is pleased to announce the opening of the Chamberlain House, located next door to the historic Inn. In addition to six renovated two-room suites, this guesthouse now offers newly constructed rooms, including six additional suites and eight standard hotel rooms. You’ll be dining fine on Cape Ann this summer. Emerson Inn By the Sea spent their winter renovating their on-site restaurant, the Pigeon Cove Tavern. Expect the same locally caught seafood and dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean in a elegant, updated setting.
Cape Codder Resort & Spa is receiving an influx of family fun this summer. They’ve added four brand new family suites to the resort as well as an incredible 30,000 square foot Indoor Water Park (with a retractable roof!). Located in Belfast, Maine, the Belfast Breeze Inn will reopen this spring with a new entry and a handicapped-accessible ramp system. Stay tuned as well for a new roof and lush gardens, going in this summer.
Though the Inn at Diamond Cove opened last summer, only 26 of the property’s 44 rooms were up and running. This Portland, ME property's winter was largely devoted to finishing the remaining 18 rooms. Summer 2016 will actually be the first season that the complete property is officially open. Over the past four years, The Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport, ME, has been hard at work keeping their 102 year old building looking fresh. In the colder months, they upgraded their internet access, installed a brand new outdoor kitchen next to their pool, and completely updated their lobby.
Just call winter in New England a time of metamorphosis. Just like the newly emerging butterfly, Best Western Cold Spring, in Plymouth, Mass., is ready to reemerge with 100 percent room renovations this spring. In addition, solar panels have been installed on two buildings with the capability to power 10 homes. There have been changes afoot at the Woodstock Inn. Like The Colony Inn, they, too, gave some love to their lobby through designing a new lobby and library that act as a community "living room." Your ascension will now be even easier at the Nonantum Resort. They’re adding a brand new elevator to their Carriage House Inn (in addition to their original 1800’s Otis elevator).
