In search of hot spots for romance, we asked a panel of experts to choose the most romantic places in New England for a kiss. Our member innkeepers, guests and Facebook fans have nominated, voted for and finally chosen these romantic places. Whether you’re looking for a place to pop the question or a memorable moment, one of these sweet spots will fit the bill. 5. The Potting Shed at Earth, Kennebunkport, ME Focusing on fresh food from “farm to fork,” Earth is an open-air restaurant at Hidden Pond resort. Tuck yourself and your sweetheart into the private Potting Shed and savor the handmade, local cuisine all on your own, and don’t be afraid to get close. 4. The Nubble Lighthouse, York, ME The famed Nubble Lighthouse near the coastal town of York, Maine, is one of the most photographed lighthouses in New England and a must-do for a romantic getaway in Maine. Its romantic history dates back to the lighthouse’s early days, when it hosted the keeper’s daughter’s wedding in 1903. Nowadays, visitors can take in the view of the Nubble Lighthouse from a close distance in Sohier Park, an inspiring sight in every season. As the folks at the nearby Beachmere Inn say, “what a backdrop for a kiss, no matter the weather.” 3. 1785 Inn & Restaurant, North Conway, NH New Hampshire’s Mount Washington Valley spreads in front of the windows of this romantic New England inn. Admire the mountains from the comfort of your room, or get out into the landscape on the inn’s cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails. If you’re not already feeling on top of the world, a kiss is sure to do the trick. 2. Edgell Covered Bridge, Lyme, NH Covered bridges were once known as "kissing bridges,” a chance for smitten travelers to kiss unobserved. It was very romantic to pass through a covered bridge in a buggy and stop and give your passenger a secret smooch — and it’s just as romantic today. Ask for directions at the nearby Breakfast on the Connecticut, or better still, make a trip to the Edgell bridge a part of a romantic getaway in New Hampshire. And the best place to kiss, our choice for the most romantic place in New England: 1. Winter Wonderland Maze at the Jackson House Inn, Woodstock, VT Sparkling with snow and lights, the "Winter Wonderland" maze is a perfect place to “get lost” for a secret tryst. Nestled away on the Jackson House grounds, the grove of evergreen trees has plenty of nooks in which to steal a kiss. Later on, dream by the fire with your sweetheart, enjoying a romantic evening at the Jackson House Inn. Honorable mention: These places have such intriguing traditions and wonderful history, we had to include them — there is no shortage of romantic places in New England! Okemo Fire Tower, Ludlow, VT Skiers and snowboarders who visit Okemo’s Jackson Gore Inn in winter are familiar with the steel structure located at the summit of the South Face area. Warm-weather visitors can hike the three-mile Healdville Trail to Okemo’s historic fire tower. Romance prevails with a passionate, breathless kiss at the top of the stairs climbing to the top of the tower — though whether the breathless-ness comes from the stair climb or the kiss is a mystery. Wolfe's Tavern at the Wolfeboro Inn, Wolfeboro, NH Tradition holds that when a patron earns their illustrious pewter stein or stainless martini glass, their success will be announced with the Tavern bell and cheers as they “kiss the moose” for luck. Sebasco Harbor Resort, Sebasco Estates, ME Sebasco Harbor Resort has a rare west-facing location, granting sunsets that are hard to find in Maine. Savor the sunset while dining on the waterfront or treat yourself and your loved one to a massage at the Fairwinds Spa.
